Origami and geometry

Origami, which we can consider as an art, science, and entertainment, has great importance in the learning of mathematics. For the mathematician, the beauty of origami is in its simple geometry. On each piece of paper, there are geometric patterns, combinations of angles and lines that allow the sheet to have varied and interesting shapes.

Transforming a flat piece of paper into a three-dimensional figure is a unique exercise in spatial understanding. Origami is also important in the teaching of symmetry because what is done on one side, becomes the same on the other side.

Some of the advantages of working with Origami are:
  • It provides a pedagogical tool that allows developing different contents, not only conceptual but also procedural contents.
  • It develops psychomotricity and, fundamentally, fine psychomotor skills, as well as spatial perception.
  • Develop manual dexterity, accuracy in the performance of work and manual precision.
  • It relates the discipline of mathematics to other sciences, such as the arts.
  • It motivates the child to be creative since he can develop his own models.
In the following video, you will see step by step how to do an Origami pig in a really easy way!! Will you try to do it?
